Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Thom: “Born and spent the first 19 years of my life in the Netherlands, but I don’t feel any strong connection to the country. I’ve always felt more of an American at heart, and that feeling was only confirmed after spending two years in America for studies. Now I’m living in Pisa, Italy until I get the chance to return legally and permanently.”

When did you start painting?
Thom: “I started painting two years ago and I am self-taught. Painting is a hobby for now but I am actively trying to make a career of it.”

What materials do you use for your artwork?
Thom: “I use pencil, fineliner, and gouache paint.”

What subjects do you like to paint?
Thom: “I like to paint everything from landscapes to portraits, because it all interests me and I wish to improve my skills in every area, though I think scenes from nature are my favorite, either close-up or landscapes.”

Have you had any exhibitions or publications?
Thom: “Yes, just one small exhibition so far, at a local studio here in Pisa.
I wrote an article which was published on outdoorpainter.com about a recent painting I did of a burned-out train near Pisa in Italy. That was my first and so far only publication.”

Who is your favourite artist?
Thom: “James Gurney.”
