Shirley Peters
Shirley Peters lives in Syndey, Australia and she is a landscape artist. She paints plein-air in the country, using her motorhome to travel from beach to river to mountains (with husband Bob and Honey the dog). At home she makes ‘slow art’ in her studio by painting large detailed works inspired by her travels; and once a year Peters paints a daily watercolour of the Tour de France bike races. Since 2014 Shirley has lived and worked from her studio in Mulgoa, prior to that, 37 years in Putney, near Sydney.
When did you start painting?
Shirley: “I went to the National Art School in 1971, and my serious painting starts around that time. But as a commercial artist, illustration took up most of my time, so oil painting was not an everyday thing.”
What materials do you use?
Shirley: “Traditional oil on canvas”
What subjects do you paint?
Shirley: “A large landscape can act as a window: you have a permanent view of a beautiful natural scene. As a break, once a year, I like to paint the bike riders during Le Tour de France.
Did you go to art school?
Shirley: “National Art School, Graphic Design School, Multimedia classes, print making at Julian Ashtons and the Sydney Gallery School. I was a graphic designer during the bulk of my years. Then I started illustrating children’s books. From there I pivoted to fine art painting, where I have used oils, acrylic and watercolour.”
