Johannes Wessmark
Can you tell us about yourself?
Johannes: “I am a self-taught artists and I am from Sweden.”
When did you start painting?
Johannes: “I started painting in the nineties and got a job working as an illustrator.”
What inspires you to paint?
Johannes: “Painting beautiful things like women and shiny things like cars, glass or water inspire me.”
Did you go to art college or are you self-taught?
Johannes: “I am self-taught, I worked in illustration which taught me a lot.”
What medium do you use?
Johannes: “I paint on canvas that is prepared with gesso until it is as smooth as paper. With an airbrush and acrylic paint, I block in the larger areas and background. The details I fill in with small paintbrushes using either acrylic or oil.
What do you specialise in?
Johannes: “Realism. There are no differences between painting shiny reflections in the water and a dull area of dirt. It is all about observing the reference photo. When you look closely and really identify the details in the photo there are only different colours and shapes. What it represents doesn´t matter.”
Where can we see your work?
Johannes: “If you would like to see my work in real life, it’s hanging in the Tangent Contemporary in San Francisco or Gallery Scandinavia in Stockholm.
There are also some paintings here in my studio.”
