Alex Kasyan
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Alex: ” am an artist and I create portrait and figurative paintings and drawings. Originally I am from Georgia, now I live and work in Montral, Canada.”
When did you start painting?
Alex: “I was first introduced to the oil painting at the age 14. While visiting a national parliament in Quebec city, I could not get my eyes off some of the portrait paintings that were displayed there. It is there and then I decided that this is what I wanted to do, I wanted to become a painter. Upon returning home I asked my parents to sign me up for art classes and the rest is history.”
What inspires you to paint?
Alex: ” just can not imagine what I would do without painting.”
What medium do you use the most?
Alex: “oil and pastel.”
Describe your artwork in 5 – 10 words.
Alex: “My work can be described as contemporary realism painting and drawing.”
What materials, techniques and tools have you used to create your artwork?
Alex: “Oil is my main speciality, however I recently introduced pastel to my practice and am planning on exploring further this material.”
What subjects do you like to paint and why?
Alex: “My main subject of interest is painting people. It somehow never stops to amaze me when I see a masterful artwork at a museum, art gallery, online or in a book.”
Did you go to an art college or are you self taught?
Alex: “I was very fortunate to have been taught by great teachers, who have given me an incredible knowledge. I graduated from Dawson College in Montreal in Illustration program, and moved to New York to study at the Water Street Atelier under Jacob Collins and took art classes at the Art Students league with great teachers among whom was Nelson Shank, a true legend in portrait and figurative painting.”
Do you have a career in art or is it a hobby?
Alex: “Painting is my career.”
If you had a choice of just four colours, what would they be?
Alex: “Hard question to answer, however if I had access to only 4 tubes of paint I would have to say yellow ochre, cad red, ivory black, and titanium white. This is a limited palette that was used by Anders Zorn, 19th Swedish artist.”

Alex: ” have participated in a number of exhibition. My last ones are Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Mall Galleries, London 2021, Figurativas at the Museum of European Modern Arts, Barcelona 2019, John B. Aird Gallery, Toronto, 2021.
